ABOUT US

Guyandotte Civil War Days was started in 1989 by Teresa Lynn Anderson Lycons.

It was her dream as a founding member, that Guyandotte would take its rightful place in history. Restoring its former glory in the minds and hearts of its young people, that before did not realize how important this little town was, and still is to all the surrounding areas.

Guyandotte Civil War Days and the Raid on Guyandotte, Inc. is a Not-for-Profit Corporation organized to educate the general public about the role of Guyandotte, Va. now WV., during the Civil War, 1861 - 1865. This is accomplished through battle re-enactments, military drills and demonstrations, living history encampments, live-fire shooting events, and memorial ceremonies.  Re-enactments of known historic events and living history scenarios will be presented over the weekend.  Dressed in authentic costumes of the era, men, women and children participate in our re-enactments, including the gun battles.

Held in the actual town of Guyandotte, now part of Huntington, WV.  Guyandotte Civil War Days focuses its programs on this historic event in an effort to celebrate and promote the rich heritage of our area.  The re-enactment of the Confederate Raid on Saturday is the highlight of this event. A true re-enactment based on known historical facts concerning the November 10, 1861, skirmish.  The re-enactment of the Union Troops recapturing the town on Sunday will demonstrate the actual events of November 11, 1861.

On Saturday and Sunday, gun battles are scheduled, complete with canon fire.  Sunday offers a morning church and memorial service open to the public and more fun. Food booths sell sodas, kettle corn, hot dogs and more. Vendor booths sell hoop skirts, men’s battle clothing, caps, hats, socks, boots, books, posters and items of interest to the public.

Attendance to the event is Free and Open to the Public and an educational experience for young and old alike. The battle simulations provide an appreciation of the experiences of America’s ancestors in the United States.  If you’ve never seen this event, it is highly recommended as an attraction for even just an hour’s visit. Click on the Event Times link below for a complete schedule.

It is a family-oriented event that children and adults enjoy. Don’t forget to check out the display cases at the Guyandotte Library, 203 Richmond St., during the week for a display of Civil War facts and photographs.  This is also a great time to take advantage of the Library’s Annual Book Sale; Sat. 10am-5pm.  Just a hint, get there early as books, magazines and videos go fast!
